The

Capow!
Fund:

Unbounded Avalanche Education

AVALANCHE EDUCATION IS LIMITLESS.  THE ACCESS TO EDUCATION IS AN OPPORTUNITY.

Traditionally, backcountry education has not been accessible to everyone who needs it.

Enter, stage right: The Capow Fund.

We have all been in a delicate place in our lives where we are in need of mentorship. Invaluable lessons and answers to some of life’s most annoying questions await us in the mountains; in our experience, the amazing sport of ski touring has allowed us to access (some of) them.

Our team has been lucky to have incredible support along the way (you could call it a journey, but we aren’t going to shove that word down your throat). As a result, we believe that hands-on learning with someone that is more experienced than you is the best way to get your head on straight about safety in the backcountry (think: Rafiki and Simba’s relationship).

Directed by some of the best snow professionals in the industry: Greg Hill, Kevin Hjertaas, Eric Hjorleifson, Izzy Lynch, Silas Patterson, Chris Rubens and Marty Schaffer, this program has been created to bring some serious heart to the sport that has shown us so much love.

Through fundraising and sponsorship, the Capow Fund will be used to grant scholarships to those who need financial assistance for backcountry education, as well as provide subsidized education opportunities (Fun-Ed) to make learning about safety in the backcountry more accessible to all.

This means that you don’t have to become a guide to make the world a better place. Wink and gun.

SCHOLARSHIPS

In the backcountry, we rely on each other. From training to gear, your crew needs to be dialed. Do you have a homie that could use a little help from their friends so that he/she could be “a little more reliable”? The Capow team has seen it all, and wants to create an opportunity to raise the level of your entire touring group – by sorting out the guy/gal that needs it the most.

Here’s the deal: we want to hear the story. Top to bottom, whats the missing link that this character is in need of? Is their gear a liability/what’s their excuse for not taking an AST 1 or 2? Do they need some support for their first professional level course? Do most people think they an irretrievably lost cause? Whatever the story is – tell us. We have financial contributions and Backcountry Access kits for those cases who need it the most.

As a rule, we don’t support unpreparedness. Call the submissions process one part charity, one part public shaming. We look forward to reading them, and will probably have to post the best ones online.

FUN-ED

Who says learning has to be boring? We believe that you learn more when you’re enjoying your (damn) self. Our Fun-Ed program involves targeted days that don’t require anything from you except to show up – anyone who played sports in high school knows how important that factor is.

Lead by members of the Capow! guiding team, we have created a series of Fun and Educational events that include everything from youth and women’s camps to split board specific guided days. These events are all graciously funded by our supporters (you guys!), and are by donation. We invite everyone and anyone to come hang – these days don’t involve duct-taped blisters and joint pain – our Fun-Ed program is as comfortable, accepting and chill as the Montessori school in Nelson.

We aren’t an oil & gas company. We’re a backcountry safety movement. We believe in giving back to the community. Namaste. Lol.

Empowering the future

There is a crucial moment in every teenage girl’s personal development that has very little to do with  an awkward conversation with her mom, crop-tops, and/or her crush. We’re referring to the moment when young girls begin to understand what self-confidence truly is (although these lessons will continue to reappear, especially in her twenties – a challenging decade).

The discovery of self-confidence doesn’t have to be touchy-feely. It is certainly not found in the pages of Teen Vogue or anywhere on social media. It does not come from the outside – although the outdoors can be an environment in which powerful lessons can integrate themselves into the makeup of a young woman. As in, real makeup: powerful legs, strong lungs and one hell of a decision-making brain.

How about learning how to navigate in the backcountry with your adorable/badass crew of shred puppies? Or setting up to smash your first pillow line? Or practicing how to say HELL NO when some boy tries to talk you into pushing to the summit when the weather has changed and you know full well that it’s time to turn around? (this will also come in handy in your twenties)

The Female Empowderment camp aims to bring powerful girls together to set their own trends and build confidence in the backcountry. There will be shredding involved, but the main goal will be to get the know-how at a young age on how to handle the special experience that being a ” backcountry skier chick” truly is.

With Izzy Lynch, professional skier and life crusher, Kate Devine, lifelong backcountry skier and ACMG Certified Ski Guide, teen girls now have the opportunity to learn the basics of the shreducation curriculum that Capow! offers, in a camp tailored specifically to their needs (feelings very much allowed).  This camp focuses on giving young girls the tools to  build confidence, make decisions, communicate fearlessly and speak up when they’re skiing in the backcountry – as well as when they’re living life.

In other words, this camp is a whole new way to scare your mother – without the lower back tattoo.
